第一是指那些不太成功而需要帮助的人(或机构);“跛足鸭”(a person or an organization that is not very successful and that needs help);第二种含义是(不能继续连任的)即将届满卸任的从政者(或政府);“跛脚鸭”,(a politician or government whose period of office will soon end and who will not be elected again)
Carter:I don't think the president will be able to do much for the country now.
Sonia:Why do you say that?
Carter:Well,he's already served his first term, and his second one is almost over.
Sonia:So,are you saying he's just a lame duck now?
He will finish his term next year;now he's just a lame duck president.
Look, I'm not one of your lame ducks.
He must recognise by now that he will be a one-term, increasingly lame duck president.
Now I'm the hanger-on at these parties-the lame duck.
He is a lame duck manager who cannot even set clear goals for his team.
