Today, our major is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
今天，我们的主角是大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国，就是我们常说的英国。
As usual, first to introduce the flag. 按照惯例，我们先来看看它的国旗。
我们常见的是这一张，俗称“米字旗”

That’s a long story about the history.
这是历史长河中的一个冗长故事。
At first, let's look at the map.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland contains England,Scotland,Wales, and Northern Ireland.
首先，我们先来看看英国的地图，它的疆域包含英格兰，苏格兰，威尔士和北爱尔兰。
英国地图So the Union flag stands for these lands' elements.
其实联合国旗是这些地方元素的集合。
As we know, the flag is based on Red Cross and X cross.So let’s talk about them.
我们可以看到，旗帜是基于红十字和X十字的，那么我们先来谈谈它们。
Long long ago, there was a devil dragon destroyed many villages and killed too many people, then there was a (Paladin)holy Knight called George killing the dragon, after that, the blood of dragon gathered to be a red cross.
很久以前，有只恶龙毁坏了诸多村庄，伤害了许多百姓，后来有一个名叫George的圣骑士斩杀了恶龙，恶龙的血在地面正好形成了一个红色十字。
圣乔治屠龙During the Third Crusades,in 1190, Lion Heart Richard I beat the enemies at that place where St.George killed the dragon, so he thought this victory was prayed by St.George, the Patron saint of England.
In 1200, St George flag was designed, several years later, in 1277, this flag of the red cross on white ground was regarded as Nation Flag of England.
在第三次十字军东征期间，1190年，狮心王理查一世在当年圣骑士乔治斩杀恶龙的地方大败敌军，他认为这场胜利是英格兰守护神圣乔治的保佑才有的。后来在1200年，圣乔治旗问世，在1277年，白底红十字的圣乔治旗成为英格兰的国旗。
狮心王与十字军东征And the white X cross on blue ground belongs to Scotland,besides,X cross stands for Saint Andrew who is the Patron saint of Scotland. In 1603,James I unified England and Scotland, then in 1606, these two nation flag combined into “MI ZI” flag.
蓝底白十字旗是属于苏格兰的，白十字也象征着苏格拉守护神安德鲁。1603年，詹姆士一世统一英格兰和苏格兰，并于1606年将两种旗帜合并成最初的米字旗。
苏格兰守护神圣安德鲁Another red x cross on white ground belongs to Ireland, red x cross stand for Saint Patrick who is the Patron saint of Ireland.
另一个白底红色X十字则属于爱尔兰，红色X十字象征爱尔兰守护神，帕特里克。
爱尔兰守护神圣帕特里克Two centuries later, At 1st, January, 1801, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland decided the Union flag was Three in one(Red cross on white ground+white x cross on blue ground+red x cross on white ground) ,then named Union flag, or Union Jack.
两个世纪后，在1801年1月1日，大不列颠及爱尔兰联合王国决定设立联合旗帜为白底红十字+蓝底白x+白底红x的融合，通称为Union flag,或Union Jack.

（1） Why is the union flag called Union Jack? 为什么联合旗帜也叫Union Jack？
Union 是联合的意思，Jack除了作人名外，在海军用语中表示悬挂在舰首的旗帜。在1588年西班牙无敌舰队惨遭英国重击后，英国成为海上霸主，海上军事力量空前强大，所以联合旗帜借用彰显海上力量的Union Jack,同时也象征英国岛国的海洋文明及生活传统。

为什么联合旗帜中没有威尔士的元素？
刚才我们提到Union flag是英格兰、苏格兰和爱尔兰三种旗帜的融合，那为什么会没有威尔士的元素呢？
There are about two reasons, 大概有两个原因
A. It’s too late to join the meeting about designing union flag.
第一个原因，是设计旗帜时，威尔士太晚了，没有搭上设计专车，
威尔士有属于自己的旗帜，Red Dragon flag,红龙旗，这个旗帜是到19世纪中期才开始正式使用。虽然威尔士对红龙的崇拜可以追溯到The once and future King- Arthur king 亚瑟王时期，但在设计Union flag时还是晚了一步。
其实除了红龙旗之外，威尔士还有一个旗帜也是有十字特征的。Yellow cross on black ground,黑底黄色十字，象征着威尔士的守护神Saint David.不过相对比较好组合的其他线条元素和颜色搭配，威尔士的红龙形象与黑底黄十字也不太好组合。

第二个原因，是威尔士没有设计Union flag的资格。
为什么呢？在1284年，英格兰国王爱德华一世，征服了威尔士全境，并颁行了“威尔士法”。威尔士虽是一个独立主体，但是却也成为英格兰的附庸，其地位在英格兰、苏格兰、爱尔兰之下。据说，爱德华一世接受了威尔士人归顺的条件，同意由一位在威尔士出生、不会讲英语、生下来第一句话说威尔士语的亲王作为他们的领袖。于是，爱德华一世把行将分娩的王后接到威尔士，而生下的王子便是第一位“威尔士亲王”爱德华二世。此后，英格兰国王便按惯例将“威尔士亲王”的名号，授予自己的长子。而国王的长子，又是王位第一继承人。因此，威尔士亲王的头衔，也就成为了英国王储的同义词，就像现在英国女王伊丽莎白二世的儿子查尔斯王子，于1958年被立为威尔士亲王，也就是王储。所以，在设计联合国旗时有了英格兰也就不会用到威尔士元素了。
