号称捍卫言论自由的《纽约时报》专栏作家、普利策奖得主，Bret Stephens最近火了。
原因并不是，他捍卫了言论自由，而是他在被人在推特上戏称为“臭虫”后，把说好的“言论自由”全忘记了。
不仅发邮件责骂对方，还抄送了对方的领导。
这个闹剧的原因，来自《纽约时报》大楼里的几只无辜的臭虫。因为在大楼里发现了臭虫，《纽约时报》给员工们写了这样一封邮件：
During an extermination sweep of the newsroom over the weekend, we discovered evidence of bedbugs in a wellness room (02E4-253) on the second floor, a couch on the third floor and a booth on the fourth floor.
在周末清扫新闻编辑室的过程中，我们在二楼的健身房（02E4-253），三楼的沙发和四楼的一个摊位上发现了臭虫。
乔治华盛顿大学的教授David Karpf看到后，拿臭虫的段子在网上调侃了一番。
Riffing on the newspaper’s predicament, David Karpf, an associate professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University, poked fun at Stephens on Twitter on Monday evening.
周一晚上，乔治华盛顿大学媒体和公共事务副教授David Karpf对臭虫攻占《纽约时报》表现出了极大兴趣，周一晚上在推特上调侃了Stephens。
The bedbugs are a metaphor. The bedbugs are Bret Stephens.

但是该帖子当时并没有什么反响，只收到了九个喜欢和零转推。虽然David Karpf教授没有@ Stephens，但是这个记者还是发现了这条推。
气得不行的Stephens连夜给David Karpf写邮件，还CC了Karpf的领导，想要把他拖下水。

Someone just pointed out a tweet you wrote about me, calling me a "bedbug." I'm often amazed about the things supposedly decent people are prepared to say about other people -- people they've never met -- on Twitter. I think you've set a new standard.

I sincerely apologize for any part I’ve played in making it worse, and to anyone I’ve ever hurt. Thanks to all my followers, but I’m deactivating this account.”
